We interviewed a former student of the Brandon
Raynor massage training in NSW. See what they
have to say about their massage career after completing
our course:
Michael Dunne
An Aikido 4thdan, martial art teacher of 25 years
experience, trained in shiatu in the mid 1980's,
parapsychology since 2000, and coach since 2005
and having a strong interest in the development
of human potential. Founder of The Intuitive Well,
The Organic Network and Sydney's iconic Macro
Wholefoods 1984-2004.
When my business partner and I sold Macro in 2004,
I wanted to ensure that in my new business I had
time to devote my attention to the things I am
most passionate about. Predominantly, the study,
development and teaching of energy and how to
work with it. Despite being reasonable at shiatsu,
I had never received a qualification in the discipline
- when I learnt there were no formal accredited
schools you just studied under an experienced
practitioner and you practiced on your own. My
business activities at the time took me away from
becoming a professional practitioner to one of
occasional use on friends in need.
Having known Brandon since the early 90's and
his commitment to excellence in what he does and
to the development of people's health and wellbeing
and the fact that I like his down to earth, professional
businesslike style, I thought I would get accredited
in the Raynor method in order to get insurance
and recognition. So, I did Brandon's course at
my business here in Sydney, The Intuitive Well.
First of all, did you enjoy the course?
I learnt heaps, refreshed my memory and clarified
a lot of what I had previously learnt. I found
the style similar to the traditional learning
style from my earlier shiatsu days. It was very
down to earth, practical and informative. Our
group had a great teacher, Brett. He was very
experienced and fun and informative to learn from.
- I enjoyed the course immensely.
Were you already an experienced massage
therapist before attending the massage training
course?
Despite my previous shiatsu experience, I didn't
feel like an experienced massage therapist. The
training enhanced my previous experience and brought
me up to date on many topics that I had never
considered or felt important and gave me new skills
and ideas. By the end of the course I felt confident,
capable and experienced.
When you started massaging the public
after the course did you feel confident?
At first I felt the pressure of giving a massage
that was to be scrutinised by both the client
and the teacher. However, once I got into it and
built rapport with the client, the rhythm of the
massage took over - wow, I had a great time and
so did the clients judging by their remarks at
the end.
What was the response of the public, did
your clients comment on the massage?
My first clients response was the one that most
sticks in my mind. He was a
retired gentleman who was a health fanatic, ex
marathon runner and avid walker. When Brett read
out what he had written - I thought he had developed
a stutter. His written comment as best as I can
recall was - " That was one of the best massages
I've ever had, and I've had many - It was very,
very, very, very good. Thank you very much".
The other two clients that I massaged on the day
also gave great reports but that one stuck out
the most.
Does your insurance cover your business?
I took out professional indemnity insurance cover
once I got accreditation - I was not eligible
previously to doing the course. It was a relief
to be eligible to receive this cover. It was one
of the driving factors for me to do the course.
What are my massage rates?
Currently I am charging $110 including GST
I find this very reasonable as I only do 2 hour
sessions where I combine a 1.5Hr Raynor Technique
Massage and finish with energetic work. - I only
have the one rate.
What do you like best about being a massage
therapist?
I like to see the difference I can make to my
clients health and wellbeing. I get stoked by
the feedback that I receive.
Massage to me is part of my development in understanding
people and how to work with energy. So, I like
to give people a deep and full experience, to
explore and heal their bodies and I'm getting
great results, great feedback and referrals.
I only want to do a maximum of about 8x 2hr massages
per week as I have other personal and business
interests that also take up my time. - Therefore,
I rely mostly on word of mouth.
Having The Intuitive Well a large healing centre
in Sydney's eastern suburbs I meet a lot of massage
practitioners and I find that Brandon's Raynor
Method is developing a strong following and is
getting a great reputation for good results and
positive feedback from both clients and other
massage therapists.
Thank you for the interview.
Best regards,
Michael Dunne
